Sarralbe pool hall
Replacement of Air Handling Systems
As part of the renovation of the Sarralbe swimming pool, the communauté de communes de Sarreguemines Confluences decided to replace its ageing system. It consisted of two air handling units, one to treat the pool hall, the other to treat the changing rooms. The existing system was undersized and partially non-functional.
The swimming pool comprises a 250m2 pool with a total surface area of 990m2. The total volume to be treated is around 4000m3.
For the time being, the customer has opted to open the roof of the pool in summer, thus accepting to be subjected to the outside temperature and humidity without any special treatment (dehumidification/cooling) via the central unit.
Study
We recommended the installation of a variable-flow double-flow air-handling system, equipped with 3 rotary exchangers. The system operates with 100% fresh air and no air recirculation, ensuring excellent air quality. The rotary heat exchanger reduces the need for heating from an existing gas-fired boiler. The enthalpy wheel recovers the humidity and temperature of the return air in mid-season and winter. Lastly, the desiccant wheel dehumidifies excessively humid fresh air in summer, which also makes it possible to cool the air leaving the adiabatic unit, while controlling humidity.
Simulation
The comfort expected by the customer in the pond hall, during the opening period, is as follows: between 27°C and 29°C and between 30% and 75% humidity.
To achieve the desired objective and size the system, we simulated its operation over 2 periods: winter and summer.
Scénario | Winter | Summer |
---|---|---|
Fresh air | ||
Temperature | -10°C | 30°C |
Relative humidity | 90% | 35% |
Conditions maintained in the basin hall | ||
Temperature | 28°C | 28°C |
Relative humidity | 45% | 65% |
Control
The central unit is controlled by a PLC containing control algorithms.
In order to manage the temperature and humidity conditions in the area to be treated, this control system makes decisions in real time to achieve the most appropriate and energy-efficient air transformation.
In particular, the control system can :
- Read information from its sensors (conditions in the area to be treated – versus customer instructions, external conditions, status of plant components)
- Determine the best action to take on the basis of this information (which components to use, and to what extent)
- Calculate and adjust the airflow rate of the air handling unit to reduce the airflow rate and save energy when conditions in the zone are optimal.
The plant is also equipped with the latest “BOX SUSTAIN’AIR” supervision system.
The BOX allows you to trace the operation of the unit at all times, indicating the temperature and humidity points upstream and downstream of each exchanger, as well as the supply and return temperatures. Predictive maintenance and energy performance monitoring. These data are stored in a database.
Result after installation
Several months after replacing the old system with the new Genatis air treatment system, the feedback has been very positive.
The pool hall and changing rooms are treated with “All new air”, and the comfort levels (temperature and humidity) specified by the customer are respected.
Last but not least, the plant’s energy performance has enabled a considerable reduction in electricity and heat consumption, resulting in substantial savings.
